The Burning Bush

 

Today, reply is on mankind choosing places to be closer to GOD; oneness without sameness; sanctification; and the locations where divinity appeared as present that were marked through memorials and worship. Most of the places named throughout the holy writings are recorded as sites where sacred events occurred, and are not just geographical references. For example, Babel—later called Babylon that appears as a place of captivity and restriction for the people of GOD—is notable as a place where all mankind were smitten by GOD (without using widespread death), and the living were made to be culturally diverse. Following the flood of Noah, all his offspring eventually converged on that location to build a tower that might save them from the next flood event. Despite the promise of GOD that there he would not send another flood, the survivors from Noah demonstrated total agreement, cooperation, and peace on the earth by building a tower that would reach to heaven. In so doing, they dismissed their proper focus and work commanded by GOD: Multiply, be fruitful, and overspread (replenish) the earth. Therefore, their languages were confused, not to punish their sin and wrongdoing so much as to ensure that the earth be populated. One of the fighters in the “Yahoo! Anonymous”, among mature Christian believers, all of the many appearances and manifestations of divinity (we also say, divine fullness; active presence; the Godhead; the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) are aspects of a single revelation from the Creator to the diverse created beings and living creatures of heaven and earth. To fully apprehend the multiple streams of truth proclaiming that invisible, unseen divinity exists and resides within carnal, material, natural, and social features on the earth, sinners first must become aware and conscious that the character, makeup, process, and substance of divine fullness are the full array of inseparable spirit elements. Included are balance, eternal purpose, faith, forbearance, holiness, perfection, righteousness, wisdom, and wrath against sin.

Separation of GOD from mankind on the earth was first understood by the idea of physical separation of heaven from the earth. GOD was believed to reside within a celestial realm and sphere of life located above the sky and astronomical space. Communication, exchange and interaction with divinity continued on a daily basis through divine visitation, and by GOD appearing regularly within a space familiar and known (the Garden of Eden). However, more than a measurable distance between heaven and the earth, it is the endowment of the living with consciousness and self-will that separate the living from the Creator. There are frameworks for expression by the living that include appetite (e.g., hunger, thirst, sexual cravings), sensation (hearing, seeing, tasting, touching) and emotion/mind (anger, dreams, fear, imagination). While GOD has not put forth sin and wickedness, the operations of sin may determine choice and decision-making within the living. Sin opposes the continued existence of sacred law, the Lawgiver, and divine order throughout the universe.

Reducing the sense of separation between mankind and his maker requires visible elements that have meaning and value from GOD, and that are not simply from the errors, fantasies, fears, and superstitions of men. The meeting place GOD chose from all the many locations on the earth was in the land of Canaan (many say, the land promised to Abram), and in a specific area whose name changes within the holy writings over the course of thousands of years (e.g., Mount Moriah later Mount Zion). Among Abraham and his descendants who all endured a form of nomadic life (e.g., the exodus, the captivity, the persecution that scattered the early church), embodying covenant and imparted spirit became pronounced. Simple objects and structures were created to serve as identifiers and memorials acknowledging divine appearances, the locations where divinity has been encountered, and the places where divinity acknowledged and received offerings, praise and worship. Included have been altars, circumcision, mounds, pillars, shrines, tabernacles, and temples. Even so, redemption and salvation for mankind has required an appearance of divinity on the earth using flesh and bone as Jesus Christ (we say, the Incarnation). Consider the following that uses language from the Bible:

1. Genesis 22: 1-4, King James Version (KJV): 1 And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am. 2 And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of. 3 And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son, and clave the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God had told him. 4 Then on the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place afar off.

2. Genesis 22: 9-14, KJV: 9 And they came to the place which God had told him of; and Abraham built an altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar upon the wood. 10 And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son. 11 And the angel of the LORD called unto him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham: and he said, Here am I. 12 And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me. 13 And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son. 14 And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovahjireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen.

3. Exodus 3: 1-5, KJV: 1 Now Moses kept the flock of Jethro his father in law, the priest of Midian: and he led the flock to the backside of the desert, and came to the mountain of God, even to Horeb. 2 And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed. 3 And Moses said, I will now turn aside, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt. 4 And when the LORD saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here am I. 5 And he said, Draw not nigh hither: put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground.

Romans 8: 3-9, KJV: 3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: 4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. 5 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. 6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. 7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. 8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. 9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Today, reply is on the divine revelation received by Abraham, grace manifest as forgiveness and promise, and the Patriarch’s place in divine judgment. Divinity is being made knowable, known, accessible, and approachable through sacred law, promise, prophecy and other utterances (we say, breath; spirit; the Word). Created beings and living creatures are to receive and operate in terms of imparted spirit substance from the makeup of GOD. Included are faith, forbearance, holiness, hope, lovingkindness, wisdom, and wrath against sin. Thus, the final judgment that will occur to complete the cleansing and transformation of mankind, does not center on deeds and works alone; and final judgment is determined on the basis of the sacred content that has appeared within the living. anony”, among mature Christian believers it is understood that Abraham was granted a covenant relationship with divinity, and did satisfy all the demands placed upon him as the Friend of God. Living and traveling as a nomad, Abram commanded a household made up of his own family with the families of friends and servants. His community numbered in the thousands; and everywhere they went they demonstrated divine order and faith in the true GOD (as would evangelists). Abraham completed righteous works such as establishing wells of water and altars acknowledging Jehovah. Abraham’s error and presumption—by marrying Hagar in order to fulfill the prophecy of GOD that Sarah would bear a son through whom all the earth would be blessed—was forgiven him, and fulfilled in the person of Jesus Christ. Abraham is acknowledged, exalted and uplifted as the Father of the Faithful, because he behaved and walked correctly within the light that he was granted.

The revelation of GOD to make divinity known and approachable to Abraham was not exactly the same as that granted through the covenant with Moses (also called, the law). Even so, the promises to Abraham were intended to benefit all mankind, and have been continued using human flesh, divine law, and sacred spirit. In addition to circumcision, prophecy and sacred visions, Abraham was granted priesthood and privilege to serve through intercession and mediation in the judgment of Sodom and Gomorrah. Consider again the following that uses language from the holy writings:

1. Genesis 18: 17-19, King James Version (KJV): 17 And the LORD said, Shall I hide from Abraham that thing which I do; 18 Seeing that Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him? 19 For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the LORD, to do justice and judgment; that the LORD may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him.

2. Romans 6: 16-18, KJV: 16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness? 17 But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. 18 Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.

3. Galatians 3: 6-7, KJV: 6 Even as Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness. 7 Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham.

4. Isaiah 63: 16, KJV: 16 Doubtless thou art our father, though Abraham be ignorant of us, and Israel acknowledge us not: thou, O LORD, art our father, our redeemer; thy name is from everlasting.

Abraham and Sarah

Today, reply is on the divine use of Abraham and Sarah as a sacred pair sharing a single personhood in relationship with the Creator through divine appointment and marriage.  Marriage as a sacred tool is intended to produce “godly seed” (see Malachi 2).  As with Noah and Moses among the Patriarchs, and Jesus Christ who has provided the new creation, his church, Abraham is spoken of among Christian believers as a “second Adam.”  Developing believers are, first, to acknowledge, and then understand, that authority, dominion and power over existence, duration, and everlasting life are with the Lord our GOD.  The many occasions and sacred events (we say, miracles) where divinity has operated according to sacred laws, rather than natural laws to bring about human reproduction, birth, and new life include the birth of Samson, a Judge of Israel; the birth of Samuel, who is called the last of the Judges/the first of the prophets; the birth of John the Baptist, the son of a Levitical priest who was born full of the Holy Ghost; the birth of Jesus Christ as the Son of Man; and the birth of every repenting sinner who is “born again” through water baptism.  A fighter in the “Yahoo! “Love Unites”, Abraham found grace in the eyes of the Lord.  Adam (the first male and female) were held to be one and a sacred pair before GOD by virtue of their creation.  Abraham and Sarah are to be accounted as one on the basis of their both having been chosen to fulfill eternal purposes that expressed divine prerogative and sovereign will; on the basis of their spiritual joining through marriage; and on the basis of their having received endowments of spirit content from the Creator that allow displaying oneness without sameness.  For Adam and Abraham, marriage was not a man-made or social institution structured by law regarding family and maintained for human survival so much as it continued to be a tool of divine fullness (we say, the Godhead; the Trinity; the Father, the Son, the Holy Spirit) for making actual the multiple possibilities of sacred law, divine incarnation, inheritance, judgment, eternal life, and the necessary revelation of GOD to his own created beings and living creatures.  Abraham’s experience of divinity incorporated both prophetic visions and divine visitation.   Abraham was called by GOD to live as a nomad on the earth; and the Patriarch eventually commanded a household that may have numbered thousands, for it included the families of his male servants who also served as an army of more than three hundred.  Everywhere he traveled he dug life-giving wells for water; built altars for sacrifice; continued circumcision and covenant relationship; practiced intercession, praise, and prayer; and demonstrated worship of the true GOD.  Together with Sarah, Abraham was to accomplish a sacred event (miracle), the birth of a firstborn to a barren woman pass the age of fertility.  The birth of Isaac was to be a platform for the birth of Jesus Christ as Messiah.  Consider again the following that uses language from the Bible:

Instead of His Son

 

Today, reply is on the demonstration of spiritual growth provided by the faith and works of Abraham.  While Abraham is spoken of in Scripture as one of the most prosperous and wealthy of the Patriarch and the “Friend of GOD,” Abraham did not start out as one who was “perfect”.  Abraham’s beginnings were those of a simple man, a youth, challenged to commit himself to a lifestyle that included many trials and uncertainties.  Like most of us today, Abraham had to take on new knowledge, sacred knowledge, and become a new creation of Jesus Christ.  Abraham had to respond to divinity with correcting his own mistakes, discovery, gradual growth, learning, and becoming mature in the things of divine fullness (we say, the GODhead; the Trinity; the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit).   A fighter in the “Yahoo! Answers” Religion and Spirituality forum using the ID “Anonymous” (no profile information appears) posted the following:

 

Why did Abraham question God when he was going to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah, but never questioned him when he was told to kill his child?

It’s odd that he didn’t trust that God had good reason to destroy the city, but then trusted that Good knew best when it came to having him slaughter house own child…

“Anonymous”, you are speaking of both the faith and works of Abraham.  Along with building sacred altars, offering sacrifices to GOD, and demonstrating acceptable worship, Abraham dug life-giving wells of water, maintained a coherent community of thousands while living and regularly traveling as a nomad, and led his entire household into a covenant of circumcision.  Here are some other points to consider:

(1.)  Abraham did not challenge or question whether GOD had good reason to destroy Sodom; Abraham sought to know whether judgment to punish would also display divine righteousness (e.g., correction, forbearance, forgiveness, impartiality, mercy, reconciliation, thoroughness without giving attention to arbitrary details).

(2.)  The account of Abraham interceding for Sodom and Gomorrah is presented within the Scriptures chapters before the account of Abraham challenged to sacrifice Isaac.  The meaning of Isaac in the covenant of circumcision was no different from that for Ishmael.  However the meaning of the two was not the same in prophecy and in revelation.  Thus, Isaac was the “firstborn” and promised heir to Abraham, as is Jesus Christ, where Ishmael was the “first born” foreshadowing the trials that would be endured by the descendants of Abraham in Egypt.  

(3.)  By his acknowledgements and responses to the Creator, Abraham increasingly expressed faith that was being edified, nourished, and built up by GOD himself.  Abraham experienced similar spiritual growth and the permanent changes that are made within those who are “born again” through Christian baptism. 

(4.)  In Abraham, the personhood of divinity and mankind were joined through commanded expectation (we say, hope), obedience to divine law, patience, promise, and prophecy.  Reverence and trust were built up gradually within multiple settings (i.e., through time and space) by divine deliverance, fulfillment, and the bearing of fruit.  Consider again the following verses from the Bible:

1.  Genesis 18:  17-21, King James Version (KJV):  17 And the LORD said, Shall I hide from Abraham that thing which I do;  18 Seeing that Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him?  19 For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the LORD, to do justice and judgment; that the LORD may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him.  20 And the LORD said, Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grievous;  21 I will go down now, and see whether they have done altogether according to the cry of it, which is come unto me; and if not, I will know.

2.  Genesis 22:  6-8, KJV:  6 And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering, and laid it upon Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife; and they went both of them together.  7 And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said, My father:  and he said, Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood:  but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?  8 And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering:  so they went both of them together.

3.  Hebrews 11:  7-19, KJV:  17 By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac:  and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son,  18 Of whom it was said, That in Isaac shall thy seed be called:  19 Accounting that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead; from whence also he received him in a figure.

Death and Hades Lake

 

Today, topics include annihilation, holy fire, and the second death.  The Lake of Fire represents divine wrath against sin.  To comprehend the purpose, sacred themes, and operations of divinity regarding the Lake of Fire, ones thoughts on common fire and natural laws must be put aside.  Also, where fairness (justice), punishment, and reconciliation are the primary goals in ongoing divine judgment, the goals of final judgment should be understood as the fulfillment of the law, salvation, and the elimination of death.  Just as the workings of holy fire separate material and spiritual substances placed as a single offering together on the altar, destroys all that offends, and conveys the holy portion up to GOD, in the Lake of Fire, divine content is preserved, purified and returned to GOD while only such things as corruption, decay, wickedness, and vanity (things empty, void, lacking spirit matter from the makeup of GOD) are consumed.  One of the fighters in the “Yahoo! Explain how “death” can be thrown into the lake of fire?

If the lake of fire is meant to be literal fire, how can a condition like death be put into it? Only flammable materials like wood can be put into fire, not abstract things like death! That would be like having a bonfire and putting in joy, sadness, tiredness, envy, etc

1.  Annihilation (final, irreversible destruction) is an aspect of the divine judgment depicted throughout the Bible by using the emblems of burning and fire. 

2.  Fire from GOD (we say, holy fire; fire of the burning bush) on a consecrated altar is used to purify offerings and sacrifices by destroying defilement, profanity, and sins they may bear at the same releasing the intended gifts to GOD (e.g., gratitude, glory, love, obedience, peace, repentance, reverence).

3.  In the same way multiple denotations and connotations  for the single word “law” occur throughout the holy writings, there are multiple applications of the word “death”. 

4.  Death is no ordinary object or thing; is finite and temporal; and is to be understood as a condition, an operation, an outcome, a process, or a purpose. 

5.  Death is not presented as a spirit substance created by divinity; death has not been endowed with personhood; and the heart, mind, personhood, and sovereign will of GOD are not subject to death as are created beings and living creatures.

The_Ten_Commandments Proclaimed

The people assembled at Mount Horeb heard the voice of GOD proclaim the covenant law.

 

Today, reply is on whether the Ten Commandments existed before the covenant of Moses.  In the same way the holy writings document the development of priesthood from the time of Adam and through the Patriarchs, successive expressions of divine law are  recorded.  The operations of sin and their consequences appeared (became manifest) before formal presentations to be answered as “law” were provided; however, principles for exchange and relationship were imparted from the beginning (we say, breath, spirit, Word).  While Moses truly was the messenger and spokesperson who first presented the written code of law provided to transform the twelve tribes of Jacob into a unified nation, Moses himself was not the author and creator of the sacred law.  Every man, woman, and child—including the Gentiles that left Egypt—would hear the voice of GOD himself proclaim all the covenant law.  The work of the law would be to sanctify all who were redeemed from Egypt to serve divinity continually.  The fighter in the “Yahoo! Update: The reasoning follows: Adam sinned & we’re all under that sin. There was no law before Moses & man had to learn what worked. The Ten were given to start a new nation. Christ lived those laws so that we don’t have to. The problem with that is, it’s not true. There are several examples of the commandments before & after Christ in the Bible. Besides, which one of those laws are so hard to keep? Well, the ones on sex. Nope, many people won’t sleep with your wife. Morality is a bugger.

“TUPELO”, here are some points that Christian believers have found important:

1.  “Ceremonial law”, priesthood, and blood sacrifice for sins began with Adam, who was instructed directly by GOD.  Aspects of formal worship were spread by the nomad, Abram (Abraham), who dug wells for water and left dedicated altars wherever he traveled.

2.  Through the impact of the seven-year famine, Egypt became a one-world empire dominated by a single man, the Pharaoh, who eventually became owner of all the land, the livestock, and the people (except for the Hebrews).  In addition to practices of idol worship, there were occult practices (divination; sorcery; witchcraft) and other elements of spiritual confusion.

3.  Before the Israelites left Egypt, seven nations occupied the land in Canaan, and were counted as being in covenant with GOD.  Because of their sins, the seven would be replaced by a new covenant people.

4.  Israel as a nation was to be an instrument in judgment against the nations that broke covenant, and a new vessel of divine law in the same way Noah’s family became an ark of testimony.  Moses appeared as a spokesperson from GOD (we say, prophet), and an embodiment of the divine spirit.  All Israel was to serve in the same way as an example to all the nations of the earth.  Consider again the following from the Bible:

(1.)  Deuteronomy 6:  4-9, King James Version (KJV):  4 Hear, O Israel:  The LORD our God is one LORD:  5 And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.  6 And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart:  7 And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.  8 And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes.  9 And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.

(2.)  Deuteronomy 7:  1-5, KJV:  1 When the LORD thy God shall bring thee into the land whither thou goest to possess it, and hath cast out many nations before thee, the Hittites, and the Girgashites, and the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites, seven nations greater and mightier than thou;  2 And when the LORD thy God shall deliver them before thee; thou shalt smite them, and utterly destroy them; thou shalt make no covenant with them, nor shew mercy unto them:  3 Neither shalt thou make marriages with them; thy daughter thou shalt not give unto his son, nor his daughter shalt thou take unto thy son.  4 For they will turn away thy son from following me, that they may serve other gods:  so will the anger of the LORD be kindled against you, and destroy thee suddenly.  5 But thus shall ye deal with them; ye shall destroy their altars, and break down their images, and cut down their groves, and burn their graven images with fire.

(3.)  Deuteronomy 4:  5-13, KJV:  5 Behold, I have taught you statutes and judgments, even as the LORD my God commanded me, that ye should do so in the land whither ye go to possess it.  6 Keep therefore and do them; for this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the nations, which shall hear all these statutes, and say, Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.  7 For what nation is there so great, who hath God so nigh unto them, as the LORD our God is in all things that we call upon him for?  8 And what nation is there so great, that hath statutes and judgments so righteous as all this law, which I set before you this day?  9 Only take heed to thyself, and keep thy soul diligently, lest thou forget the things which thine eyes have seen, and lest they depart from thy heart all the days of thy life:  but teach them thy sons, and thy sons’ sons;  10 Specially the day that thou stoodest before the LORD thy God in Horeb, when the LORD said unto me, Gather me the people together, and I will make them hear my words, that they may learn to fear me all the days that they shall live upon the earth, and that they may teach their children.  11 And ye came near and stood under the mountain; and the mountain burned with fire unto the midst of heaven, with darkness, clouds, and thick darkness.  12 And the LORD spake unto you out of the midst of the fire:  ye heard the voice of the words, but saw no similitude; only ye heard a voice.  13 And he declared unto you his covenant, which he commanded you to perform, even ten commandments; and he wrote them upon two tables of stone.

Today, reply is shared on the use of border walls in the Scriptures.  The acknowledgment of fixed boundaries and the identification of locations on the earth as specially blessed of GOD are in keeping with the principles and demands for divine order.  For many centuries, those who were the keepers of divine mystery in the earth wandered as nomads.  While they left behind no permanent housing they often left a “footprint” of sacred altars and life-saving wells of water.  Multiple structures were already in place for those who entered the Promised Land with Joshua.  Perhaps the most important function of walls for Israel was that they served as landmarks, and made visible their inheritance as a people chosen of GOD.  In addition to being used as barriers to control the movement and traffic of foreigners and strangers, walls were defensive weapons used against siege warfare, and an enhancement to beautify cities and provide the appearance of strength and prosperity.  The description of the New Jerusalem that appears in Scripture as the Bride of Christ and the Holy City provides details of its twelve foundations, its single wall, and its twelve gates.  A fighter at “Yahoo! “LovelyGiraffe”, the borders, countries, and land promised to Abraham that would become the inheritance of those in covenant with Moses are described in the Book of Joshua, chapters 13-20.  The holy writings describe many massive building projects that include the Tower of Babel, the monuments of Egypt, the ark of Noah, and the Temple at Jerusalem.  Speaking to the building of border walls in particular, consider the following points that use the language of the Bible:

(1.)  2nd Chronicles 14:  2-8, King James Version (KJV):  2 And Asa did that which was good and right in the eyes of the LORD his God:  3 For he took away the altars of the strange gods, and the high places, and brake down the images, and cut down the groves:  4 And commanded Judah to seek the LORD God of their fathers, and to do the law and the commandment.  5 Also he took away out of all the cities of Judah the high places and the images:  and the kingdom was quiet before him.  6 And he built fenced cities in Judah:  for the land had rest, and he had no war in those years; because the LORD had given him rest.  7 Therefore he said unto Judah, Let us build these cities, and make about them walls, and towers, gates, and bars, while the land is yet before us; because we have sought the LORD our God, we have sought him, and he hath given us rest on every side. So they built and prospered.  8 And Asa had an army of men that bare targets and spears, out of Judah three hundred thousand; and out of Benjamin, that bare shields and drew bows, two hundred and fourscore thousand:  all these were mighty men of valour.

(2.)  Nehemiah 1:  1-4, KJV:  1 The words of Nehemiah the son of Hachaliah. And it came to pass in the month Chisleu, in the twentieth year, as I was in Shushan the palace,  2 That Hanani, one of my brethren, came, he and certain men of Judah; and I asked them concerning the Jews that had escaped, which were left of the captivity, and concerning Jerusalem.  3 And they said unto me, The remnant that are left of the captivity there in the province are in great affliction and reproach:  the wall of Jerusalem also is broken down, and the gates thereof are burned with fire.  4 And it came to pass, when I heard these words, that I sat down and wept, and mourned certain days, and fasted, and prayed before the God of heaven,

(3.)  Nehemiah 4:  16-18, KJV:  16 And it came to pass from that time forth, that the half of my servants wrought in the work, and the other half of them held both the spears, the shields, and the bows, and the habergeons; and the rulers were behind all the house of Judah.  17 They which builded on the wall, and they that bare burdens, with those that laded, every one with one of his hands wrought in the work, and with the other hand held a weapon.  18 For the builders, every one had his sword girded by his side, and so builded. And he that sounded the trumpet was by me.
