Spirit of Prophecy

Today, reply is on Bible reports describing the divine use of prophets on the earth following the ministry of Jesus Christ; the process of prophecy; and prophecy sealed through the Book of Revelation. The birth, life, ministry, death, resurrection, and return of Jesus to heaven did address and fulfill many major divine promises and prophecies. Even so, the full range of sacred works required for redemption, salvation, and eternal life are yet to be completed; and divine works expressing prophecy will continue to appear on the earth. Included will be the first and second resurrections; the judgment and distribution of rewards; the Garden of Eden returned to the earth; and the descent of the Holy City from heaven to the earth. Christian workers will continue to occupy such offices as ambassadors, apostles, evangelists, prophets, and spokespersons; yet, none will be exalted above others through competition, hierarchy, or vainglory. Jesus Christ will reign as Messiah and High Priest. It is written: 1st Thessalonians 4: 16-18, King James Version (KJV): 16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: 17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. 18 Wherefore comfort one another with these words. What Does the Bible Say About Prophets After Jesus?

THE GOLDEN ARROW: And God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul: So that from his body were brought unto the sick handkerchiefs or aprons, and the diseases departed from them, and the evil spirits went out of them. Then certain of the vagabond Jews, exorcists, took upon them to call over them which had evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth. And there were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew, and chief of the priests, which did so. And the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye? And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and overcame them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded. And this was known to all the Jews and Greeks also dwelling at Ephesus; and fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified. (Acts 19: 11-17, King James Version, KJV)

jane”, within the system of Christian belief, the entire movement of prophecy and revelation from the time of Adam has been the declaration of divinity appearing incarnate using human form as Jesus Christ. The ministry on the earth completed by Jesus for the transformation of mankind to exist as immortal and incorruptible will be completed through operations of the Comforter who has been sent as his chief agent and representative. (We also say, the Holy Spirit, the Holy Ghost, the Spirit of Prophecy, the Spirit of Truth.) Because the full manifesting of Christ is the “end of the law” (i.e., the essential principle, process, and divine substance embodied within sacred law), no human replacement, successor, or follower of Christ is named in Scripture. Moreover, the further appearance of apostles, prophets, and spokespersons does not appear so much as admonitions and cautions against the antichrist spirit, instruction regarding false prophets, and description of specific patterns among end time events.

Within the church founded by Jesus, men and women will continue to be anointed and ordained serving as child-bearers, healers, sacred messengers, priests, kings, miracle-workers, evangelists, and teachers. Developing and mature Christian believers should not expect or look for any new proclamation, or fresh revelation that contends against the Bible record concerning the operations of GOD for salvation and eternal life. While many notable modern-day figures and workers have been promoted publicly as genuine agents of Christ (e.g., Joseph Smith; Ellen G. White; Oral Roberts; Kathryn Kuhlman; Billy Graham) the prophecies do not describe any alternatives to Christ, or religious figures who become prominent through self-promotion except the Antichrist. Consider again the following that uses language from the Bible:

1. 1st John 4: 1-6, King James Version (KJV): 1 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. 2 Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God: 3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world. 4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world. 5 They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them. 6 We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.

2. Daniel 7: 21-27, KJV: 21 I beheld, and the same horn made war with the saints, and prevailed against them; 22 Until the Ancient of days came, and judgment was given to the saints of the most High; and the time came that the saints possessed the kingdom. 23 Thus he said, The fourth beast shall be the fourth kingdom upon earth, which shall be diverse from all kingdoms, and shall devour the whole earth, and shall tread it down, and break it in pieces. 24 And the ten horns out of this kingdom are ten kings that shall arise: and another shall rise after them; and he shall be diverse from the first, and he shall subdue three kings. 25 And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time. 26 But the judgment shall sit, and they shall take away his dominion, to consume and to destroy it unto the end. 27 And the kingdom and dominion, and the greatness of the kingdom under the whole heaven, shall be given to the people of the saints of the most High, whose kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and all dominions shall serve and obey him.

3. Revelation 13: 7-10, KJV: 7 And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations. 8 And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world. 9 If any man have an ear, let him hear. 10 He that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity: he that killeth with the sword must be killed with the sword. Here is the patience and the faith of the saints.

There is far more that should be said, correctly examined, and spiritually apprehended. (For example, 4. Revelation 22: 17-19, KJV: 17 And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely. 18 For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: 19 And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.) Even so, I trust this fragment will be useful. Be it unto you according to your faith.

Jerusalem Visit by Paul the Apostle
A depiction of James, the brother of Jesus, and the Elders in Jerusalem meeting with the Apostles Paul and Peter

Today, reply is made on James, Paul, Peter and Matthias; authority; and succession within the early church.  The criteria for being acknowledged as an apostle was more than simply having been in association with Jesus from the beginning of his ministry to his dying on the cross.  The apostles all were chosen and installed to testify and witness to the resurrection of Jesus, to authentic the falling of the Holy Ghost, and to certify the genuine manifestation of sacred gifts.  Jesus did not bestow on his disciples dominance and power to demand the obedience of others so much as he provided a fresh endowment of spirit substance from the makeup of divinity along with the consciousness and willpower to serve others while practicing self-government.  The leadership within the body would be acknowledged and recognized on the basis of such features as their humility, industry, meekness, and unselfishness.  One of the fighters in the “Yahoo! Answers” forum who uses the ID “Anonymous” (no profile data shared) posted the following:

Did the Early Church operate under valid central authority?

THE GOLDEN ARROW:  Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed:  and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost.  Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.  And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord.  And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all.  But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.  For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;  To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;  To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:  But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.  For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body:  so also is Christ.  For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.  (1st Corinthians 12:  3-13, King James Version, KJV)

“Anonymous”, the Holy Spirit (we also say, the Comforter, the Holy Ghost, the Spirit of Prophecy, the Spirit of Truth) was present as the spokesperson for Jesus Christ in the early church.  Responses that rely on secular knowledge will present the church as an ordinary institution, and a formally structured social organization.  Reponses that rely on sacred knowledge shared among Christian believers will describe the church as a body, or a fellowship having many distinct members with Jesus Christ as its head.  In that view, the church is most correctly portrayed as active, alive, diverse, developing, organic, and personal.

When the continued existence of the church became threatened by persecution, the believers that came to number in thousands were scattered; however, they also began to evangelize, go out, and spread the gospel in ways that otherwise would not have occurred.  It was then that James, the brother of Jesus, and others who remained in Jerusalem began to be recognized as a legitimate body to give counsel on issues of doctrine and practice, to address the challenges of embracing both Gentiles and Jews, and to resolve recurring conflicts.

While the Book of Acts reports that Peter preached a sermon on the day of Pentecost after the Holy Spirit had fallen upon the 120 men and women in the upper Room, who had fasted and prayed together awaiting the promise, Peter was not acknowledged at that time as the “successor” to Jesus, or as the chief spokesperson.  The early work among these believers included nominating candidates to fill both the office of apostle, and of bishop (elder) that had been vacated by Judas Iscariot.

A device used among the Hebrews from ancient times was employed to select the new apostle from the two proposed candidates.  The casting of lots was used with the understanding that the will of GOD would be indicated by its outcome.  This technique was akin to that used for judgment by the High Priest in the tabernacle and in the temple that involved his consecrated garments and full regalia, the breastplate, ephod, urim and thummim (also called, Lights and Perfections).  At Pentecost, the early church received multiple gifts to nourish and expand the community of faith that would establish the will of GOD in a similar way:  the word of wisdom, the word of knowledge, faith, prophecy, the working of miracles, and discerning of spirits (there were no gifts of reading minds, or predicting the future).  Consider the following that uses language from the Bible:

(1.)  Numbers 27:  20-23, King James Version (KJV):  20 And thou shalt put some of thine honour upon him, that all the congregation of the children of Israel may be obedient.  21 And he shall stand before Eleazar the priest, who shall ask counsel for him after the judgment of Urim before the LORD:  at his word shall they go out, and at his word they shall come in, both he, and all the children of Israel with him, even all the congregation.  22 And Moses did as the LORD commanded him:  and he took Joshua, and set him before Eleazar the priest, and before all the congregation:  23 And he laid his hands upon him, and gave him a charge, as the LORD commanded by the hand of Moses.

(2.)  Acts 1:  13-16, KJV:  13 And when they were come in, they went up into an upper room, where abode both Peter, and James, and John, and Andrew, Philip, and Thomas, Bartholomew, and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon Zelotes, and Judas the brother of James.  14 These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.  15 And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples, and said, (the number of names together were about an hundred and twenty,)  16 Men and brethren, this scripture must needs have been fulfilled, which the Holy Ghost by the mouth of David spake before concerning Judas, which was guide to them that took Jesus.

(3.)  Acts 1:  22-26, KJV:  22 Beginning from the baptism of John, unto that same day that he was taken up from us, must one be ordained to be a witness with us of his resurrection.  23 And they appointed two, Joseph called Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias.  24 And they prayed, and said, Thou, Lord, which knowest the hearts of all men, shew whether of these two thou hast chosen,  25 That he may take part of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place.  26 And they gave forth their lots; and the lot fell upon Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.

There is far more to be said, correctly examined, and spiritually apprehended.  (For example, (4.)  Acts 15:  12-20, KJV:  12 Then all the multitude kept silence, and gave audience to Barnabas and Paul, declaring what miracles and wonders God had wrought among the Gentiles by them.  13 And after they had held their peace, James answered, saying, Men and brethren, hearken unto me:  14 Simeon hath declared how God at the first did visit the Gentiles, to take out of them a people for his name.  15 And to this agree the words of the prophets; as it is written,  16 After this I will return, and will build again the tabernacle of David, which is fallen down; and I will build again the ruins thereof, and I will set it up:  17 That the residue of men might seek after the Lord, and all the Gentiles, upon whom my name is called, saith the Lord, who doeth all these things.  18 Known unto God are all his works from the beginning of the world.  19 Wherefore my sentence is, that we trouble not them, which from among the Gentiles are turned to God:  20 But that we write unto them, that they abstain from pollutions of idols, and from fornication, and from things strangled, and from blood.)  Even so, I trust this fragment will be useful.  Be it unto you according to your faith.

THE BATTLE AXE:  Succession (02/04/2014)—(4.)  The apostles were indispensable to the early church, not merely as those who had known Jesus personally, and had been taught directly by the Lord; not merely as those endowed with gifts from the holy Spirit to cast out unclean spirits, to heal, and perform miracles; nor merely as those who were free to travel as itinerant preachers baptizing and building new congregations, and expanding the new church.  The apostles all could authenticate the falling of the Holy Spirit, discern the full Gospel and doctrine from GOD; and identify genuine experiences of conversion, and new birth.  (5.)  Succession permits mankind to transcend death, and continue covenant through agents, heirs, representatives, and spokespersons (prophets).  Even so, in Scripture, sin is said to be the sting (or barb) of death.  Saying that another way:  It is sin that makes death an appendage (like ones hand or foot) that we accept and are comfortable with as part of our own being, rather than something foreign and strange.  Through sin, death becomes an aspect of ones full being that is inescapable.  Once sin enters and has penetrated a created being or living creature, death cannot be retracted or smoothly withdrawn.  Death becomes anchored and cannot be removed without damage, and rupture to sin’s living host.  Thus, the focus of apostolic succession is not merely that of attaining earthly authority, property, prosperity and wealth.  Believers must continue in the priesthood of Jesus Christ, and themselves demonstrate faith, obedience, purity, sacrifice, suffering, wisdom, wrath against sin, and the proper acceptance and denial of death.  (See Acts 15:  1-35, Acts 8:  1-25 and 1st Corinthians 15:  50-57, KJV.)

THE GOLDEN ARROW:  These things command and teach.  Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.  Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.  Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery.  Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all.  Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.  (1st Timothy 4:  11-16, KJV)

Miguel, here are some points to consider about life as a Christian believer that you may find helpful in avoiding spiritual confusion:

(1.)  In Christ, the primary duty and responsibility for all young people is that they grow, and learn spiritually while encountering the same challenges and life experiences as all others upon the face of the earth.  Only while we are young, can our parents endure the hard work they must do to provide the materials, opportunities, and supports we need to continue in school, and begin our work careers.  Later, we do not have the freedom, and luxury to focus and learn in the same ways.  The many demands of our own jobs, our own developing relationships (such as dating, courtship, marriage, parenting), our own finances, our own health, often cut off our chances to further our own formal education and training.

(2.)  What’s “different” as the new life of a born-again believer is not their physical body, or the world around them as an environment for human existence.  Through water baptism, believers die to sin, and are reborn having divine DNA, so to speak.  What is “new” is their outlook on life, their awareness of possibilities established by GOD, their ability to recognize the active presence of GOD, and their willingness to practice and study the things given by GOD for salvation.

There is far more to be said, properly shared, and spiritually understood.  (For example, (3.)  Throughout their lives, many believers feel they are not giving enough financially to the cause of GOD, yet, they cannot beat GOD giving, so to speak.  Despite “thank you” being a simple phrase (like “I love you”) believers often feel great pressure not to repeat the words so much that they lose all meaning; and many are uncomfortable, because they feel they are not saying “thank you” enough to GOD, and are not doing and saying the things that declare “I love you” enough.  As a result many become uncertain and dissatisfied that their sins are totally erased.  Believers are to trust the word and not their own works.  They are to hear and rely upon the declaration of GOD in Jesus Christ, “I love you” (see John 3:  16, KJV).)  Even so, I trust this fragment will be useful.  Be it unto you according to your faith.

Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.  But shun profane and vain babblings:  for they will increase unto more ungodliness.  (2nd Timothy 2:  15-16, KJV)

THE BATTLE AXE:  Sin Causes Death? (02/04/2014)—(5.)  Both the living and the dead come under the condemnation generated by sin.  Only by salvation wrought through Jesus Christ are they released by processes of divine judgment.  The existence of all created beings and living creatures may be terminated through peculiar operations established by GOD as judgment.  Given that all created beings and living creatures contain spirit matter that is the same substance appearing as full divinity, consecrated person, and GODhead, death only may be described as a condition, a material process, and a “state of being” for mortals and for others endowed with life from GOD who are not immortal as GOD.  While the divine aspect within us is everlasting and “indestructible,” and death may still be spoken of as a supernatural force.  However, death is not a divine person, and should not be thought of as an entity having awareness (some say, sentience) and self-will like every human being.  By their transgression, Adam embraced a continual erosion of the divine content that had been imparted to humanity. In addition to the loss of protective outer coverings for beauty and majesty, and changes in the living environment for the pair, various aspects of divinity had to be removed immediately that enabled fulfillment of commandments and sacred law, resistance to allurements and separation from GOD as well as a complete inner immune system.  As a result, mortals all undergo continuous carnal changes that result in debility and death, yet, are not instantaneous outcomes of sinful attitudes, behavior and conduct, and that repeatedly appear without further direct action by GOD (e.g., aging, disease, injury, reproduction, sickness, loss of stamina, and reduced vigor).  Also, by the influence and presence of sin, there has been a continual loss of the spirit matter once deposited within mankind.  Through the ministry of Jesus Christ, believers receive a fresh endowment of divinity; and are supplied with inseparable aspects for life that include faith, forgiveness, gratitude, holiness, humility, joy, longsuffering, love, wisdom, and wrath against sin.  Seeing with new eyes, sin is not so much a cause of death as a necessary force that directs men to seek life, long for relationships that build and maintain trust, and to lay hold upon the salvation GOD in Christ.  See Ecclesiastes 12:  1-7, Ezekiel 18:  30-32 and Ezekiel 33:  11-19, King James Version.

THE GOLDEN ARROW:  Men and brethren, let me freely speak unto you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his sepulchre is with us unto this day.  Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne;  He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption.  This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses.  Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear.  For David is not ascended into the heavens: but he saith himself, The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand,  Until I make thy foes thy footstool.  Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made the same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.  (Acts 2:  29-36, KJV)

“badwolf”, I can share only a few of the principles intended for those who are saved and set apart through service to Jesus Christ, here.  At the risk of challenging everyone more than they can handle, even so, you and your readers may consider the following:

(1.)  Apostolic succession comes into view as the process used by Matthew, Peter, James and the others to replace Judas, and maintain the full complement of 12 “official” witnesses of the Lord’s resurrection.  Candidates are first identified, and one is selected for consecration by sacred events occurring among the body of believers that are performed by the Holy Spirit.  This may include a “casting of lots” where divine will is revealed by the appearance of specific peculiar outcomes that would be improbable and unlike to result by chance.  (See Acts 1 and 2, KJV.)

(2.)  Succession is understood as another form of birthright or legacy (some would say, inheritance).  Intimate and personal relationship for created beings and living creatures who are finite and temporal are continued with eternal and omnipotent GOD through sacred devices and operations.  Included are anointing, baptism, birth, covenant, death, divine law, dynasty, judgment, nation, praise, prayer, promise, prophecy, rebirth, and sexual reproduction.

There is far more to be said, properly shared, and spiritually understood.  (For example, (3.)  The origins of succession were tied to the natural appearance of authority within the head of family, and is to be seen with the Patriarchs that followed Seth as the one appointed to the priesthood granted by GOD to Adam.  The priesthood was confirmed in Able through fire from heaven that consumed his sacrifice, rather than that of Cain.  The judges who appeared as deliverers were not chosen and established using succession.  As with the anointing of David by Samuel, and the dispensation for Solomon, the anointing in apostolic succession is an appointment as elder, king, priest, prophet, and judge. (That’s why the 24 elders have crowns.))  Even so, I trust this fragment will be useful.  Be it unto you according to your faith.

Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter:  Fear God, and keep his commandments:  for this is the whole duty of man.  For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.  (Ecclesiastes 12:  13-14, KJV)
